Residency
Your student must be a resident of Brookline to attend the Public Schools of Brookline.
Before a student can register and begin school, a parent or legal guardian must provide proof of primary residence to the Office of Registration and Enrollment. Temporary residence in Brookline for the sole purpose of attending the Public Schools of Brookline will not be accepted.
Because residency can change during the school year, the Public Schools of Brookline may verify residency at any time, including after a student has started attending classes.
The Office of Registration and Enrollment may initiate an investigation in coordination with the Residency Officer, which may include a home visit. If a student is found not to reside in Brookline, they must enroll in the school district where they actually live.
Factors That May Trigger a Residency Investigation
- Unreported changes in residency
- Mail from the school district returned as undeliverable
- Incomplete or conflicting residency documentation
- Data inconsistencies in student records
- Reports of suspected residency violations
Families found to be in violation may face penalties, including immediate withdrawal from school, per diem charges for non-resident tuition based on district costs, and possible legal action.
