Acknowledged as one of the leading districts in the nation, Brookline offers an environment that encourages each child to grow and excel. The Public Schools of Brookline employs more than 900 full and part-time teachers, counselors, and administrators and approximately 250 support staff. The Office of Human Resources directs the recruitment, hiring, and evaluation of all staff, as well as the placement of substitute teachers. Staff in the Office of Human Resources include a Director of Human Resources, a Human Resources Manager, and three Human Resources Generalists.

The School System
The Public Schools of Brookline, with a staff of over 1,600, is supported by a $136M budget and features eight PreK-8 schools, one comprehensive high school, and a robust early education program. Brookline’s PreK-8 system provides distinct advantages for children, including the ability to develop deep and lasting connections between faculty and students.
Diversity
As of March 2024, there are over 7,000 students enrolled in the Public Schools of Brookline in grades preschool through twelve. Our student population is 6% Black/African-American, 12% Hispanic/Latino, 22% Asian, 48% White, 7% Native American/Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and 11% Multi-Racial/Non-Hispanic. Approximately 39% of Brookline students come from a background where English is not their first language. Nearly 21% of Brookline students were born in a country outside of the United States. There are currently 747 students enrolled in the English Learner Education Program (ELE). The students in the ELE Program represent 38 language groups, with Japanese, Hebrew, Chinese, Spanish, Korean, Russian, and Arabic accounting for 51% of these students.
Additionally, the Public Schools of Brookline has over 1,300 students with disabilities and four Title I schools.
Non-Resident Tuition Program
The Public Schools of Brookline offers the opportunity for staff to apply for enrollment of their children in the school district. This tuition-based program is operated on a space-available basis, and no guarantees can be made for placement. Applications are due each March for consideration for enrollment in the following September. Employees must be employed in a benefits-eligible position to qualify. Beginning Teacher Support
The Public Schools of Brookline offers a comprehensive induction program to incoming faculty. After being hired, new teachers are assigned a mentor. In some cases, mentors and incoming teachers meet and work together during the summer. An orientation program in late August provides an opportunity for new educators to learn about district procedures and priorities, as well as time to prepare for the beginning of the school year. Throughout the school year, mentors meet with mentees weekly to offer support and answer questions.
