Tips
Requests are processed in the order received. Processing time depends on the size, complexity, and nature of the request.
- Requests must be made by a parent/guardian or legal representative but may be released to a third party with proper consent (e.g., attorneys or advocates).
- Narrowing the scope of your request may help expedite processing.
- The district must protect personally identifiable information. Records may require redaction, which can increase processing time. Consider limiting requests to exclude sensitive information when possible.
- For high school transcripts, please use the Brookline High School transcript request page .

Summary of Regulations Pertaining to Student Records
The Student Record Regulations adopted by the Massachusetts Board of Education apply to all public elementary and secondary schools in the state, as well as approved private schools providing publicly funded special education services. These regulations protect the rights of parents and students regarding confidentiality, access, amendment, and destruction of student records.
The regulations apply to all information maintained by a school or district in a way that identifies an individual student. Records are divided into two categories: the transcript and the temporary record.
The transcript includes essential information such as name, address, course titles, grades, credits, and grade level completed. It is retained for at least 60 years after a student leaves the district.
The temporary record contains most other student information, including test results, class rank, extracurricular activities, evaluations, disciplinary records, and related materials. Temporary records are destroyed within seven years after a student leaves the school system.
